Industrial Engineering for Apparel Professionals

Industrial Engineering for Apparel Manufacturing article

CGS employee Prasanta Sarkar has written a book on industrial engineering (IE) for apparel industry professionals. In Industrial Engineer’s Digest: Learn, Practice and Improve Factory Performance, Sarkar takes an in-depth look at apparel industrial engineering, manufacturing information systems (MIS) and apparel production.

Sarkar brings ample credentials to the book. He has spent the past 10 years working with the BlueCherry Shop Floor Control (SFC) division, where he successfully implemented SFC systems in more than 25 garment manufacturing factories in six different countries, including Sri Lanka, Turkey, Bulgaria, Bangladesh, Cambodia and India.

The guidebook is divided into five parts:

  • Part I: Industrial engineering basics
  • Part II: Data capturing, calculations and reports
  • Part III: How-to guides
  • Part IV: Improving factory performance
  • Part V: Advanced reading

Sarkar designed the book to be accessible not only to engineers, but also designers, managers and any other professionals who want to improve their factory production management processes.

“In this book, readers will find all the methods, techniques and how-to guides for performing a factory’s daily activities in a better way,” said Sarkar.

Sarkar believes everyone, even newcomers, can improve the performance of their shop floor, garment factory and production management processes. He argues that everyone can make significant improvements in the manufacturing process by learning core IE concepts, tools and methods of improving processes and activities—and then applying these lessons where applicable.

Acquiring knowledgeable and skilled employees is important to successfully manage a manufacturing unit. At the same time, in the modern era, transparency and shop floor visibility are the key parameters to run a business successfully with continuous growth. The right people still need to understand the business inside and out before they can improve it.

Among other topics, the book discusses the importance of having access to real-time data. To manage a garment factory, floor managers need the latest tools and technology solutions for viewing real-time production status and inventory levels, troubleshooting issues and identifying any bottlenecks in their processes. To improve factory performance across the board, a factory needs data from all its activities.

Employing a production management solution like BlueCherry® Shop Floor Control Enterprise, garment factories can capture information automatically in real time, as well as access and report on the data needed to better manage the production floor. Everyone at the factory (individual producers, managers and even executives) can access data across the entire production—from sewing machines to software to processes to productivity—and understand how they are performing and what can be improved.

Another bonus to the book: Apparel manufacturers that already use or plan to implement a Shop Floor Control system can learn more about industry concepts and gain knowledge and insights to improve their factory in many areas.

Industrial Engineer’s Digest is now available in print and as a Kindle eBook from Amazon.
